Mayor Sylvester Turner issued an executive order for a livable wage of, at minimum $12 per her, by 2021 for Houston Airport System contractors and concessionaires.

“The order may affect hundreds of workers at Bush Intercontinental, Hobby and Ellington airports, including those working for subcontractors to the airlines and concessionaires at the airports,” read the statement.

Turner called for gradual implementation beginning with an increase to $10.39 in 2019, $11.22 in 2020, and $12 in 2021 and 2022. For those currently making minimum wage that’s a roughly 65 percent increase.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology calculates the ‘living wage’ for one adult with no children living in Harris County at $11.99 while the poverty wage for a similar individual would be $5.84 and the minimum wage across the board is $7.25.
