Harris County Approved for Countywide Polling
In June, Harris County formally applied for state approval of its Countywide Polling Program. Today, the Texas Secretary of State’s Office approved that request making Harris the largest county in the nation to use the program.
“Approximately 36% of voters traveled outside of their home precinct to vote on Election Day. In the upcoming November election, voters will once again be able to vote anywhere in the county both on Election Day and during Early Voting,” read the press release from Diane Trautman, Harris County’s Clerk.
Trautman began pushing the program after taking office in January and won the support of Commissioners Court which allowed her to test it out during the May 4 Joint Election.
The program came into existence during the 79thlegislature. Then-State Rep. Mary Denny’s House Bill 758 added a section to the Texas Election Code paving a way for a countywide polling program.
