Four Candidates File on First Day
Incumbent Mayor Sylvester Turner, attorney Tony Buzbee, journalist and activist Derrick Broze, and Naoufal Houjami all formally became mayoral candidates on the first day of filing for Houston’s 2019 municipal election.
“I’m proud of what we’ve already accomplished together— from showing our grace, grit, and resilience during Hurricane Harvey to investing in public safety and reducing crime to creating more than 80,000 jobs in the past year focused on startups, technology and innovation,” Turner said in an email blast to supporters following his filing on Monday morning.
Buzbee took a different approach by holding a rally on the steps of City Hall following his announcement.
Flanked by supporters, family, and friends Buzbee said, “I’m tired of the hyper-partisanship, I’m tired of seeing if we could make it through the entire day without somebody calling somebody else a name…everybody wants to pick a side, what side are you going to pick? Whose side are you going to be on? I’m on the side of the residents of this great city.”
The filing period runs from July 22 through August 19 and at least 70 candidates are expected to file for mayor, controller, and city council races.
