Council Member Boykins to Enter Houston Mayoral Race
A newly created website all but confirms months of speculation: Houston Council Member Dwight Boykins will be entering the 2019 mayoral race. According to the site, an announcement is scheduled at the Wortham Center, though the date is not yet public.
Boykins, who represents District D on City Council, first took office in 2014. Since taking office, he has spent a lot of his time addressing issues like food deserts, blight, affordable housing, and re-entry initiatives for formerly incarcerated individuals. He also launched the 2ndChance Job Fair, a fair to help those underemployed and unemployed find work.
Rumors about Boykins throwing his name in the ring have circulated for months and he never denied them. When asked by Fox 26’s Greg Groogan a few months ago if he was pondering a run, he said, “wherever God leads me.”
Boykins’ site, while live, is still under development and hasn’t been publicly launched. Records indicate that it was created just last week.
When he does announce, Boykins will join Mayor Turner, Houston attorney Tony Buzbee, and businessman Bill King in the race. There is also speculation that former Houston council member Sue Lovell will be entering the race.
