2020 Renter Migration Report

Apartment List just released their 2020 Renter Migration Report detailing where renters in major American metros are moving to and from.

The report found that 22.7 percent of apartment hunters currently living in Houston are looking to move somewhere else, while 35.6 percent of those looking for a place to live in Houston are searching from outside of the metro area.
The most popular destinations for those leaving the Houston area are San Antonio, Dallas, and Los Angeles. However, San Antonio and Dallas also top the list of places renters coming to the Houston area are coming from, New York is also another place many Houston renters are coming from.

Dallas renters are searching Tyler, TX as their primary outbound destination, but other cities like Los Angeles, New York, Denver, Seattle, Phoenix, and Washington D.C. are also popular destinations for those leaving Dallas.

Data from Apartment List like this, as well as publicly available Census track data, can help paint a broader picture of migration patterns which can serve as good economic indicators.
